The project was initially backed by a funding commitment led by the MacArthur Foundation and the Sloan Foundation. Additional funding came from five cornerstone institutions—the Field Museum, Harvard University, the Marine Biological Laboratory, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and the Smithsonian Institution.
