News from the Annual Conference of Chinese Agricultural Libraries Society (CALS) on October 25 – 27 in Changsha, Hunan, China
Annual Meeting of the Chinese Agricultural Libraries Society (CALS) on the theme of “agricultural information management and service innovation” has been held from October 25 – 27 in Changsha, Hunan Province, China. There are about 70representatives from agricultural research institites and university libraries of 20 provinces attended the conference.
Dr. Meng xianxue, director of the Board of Directors of CALS addressed at the openning ceremony, he emphasized the importance of the library service innovation to strengthen the services of agricultural libraries, information technology, information sharing for rural economic development in the current stage of information society and to make better application of the National "Twelves Five-Year "plan.
President of Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Vice-Chancellor of Hunan Agricultural University, and Prof.Mei Fangquan, Honorary Chairmen of the CALS, delivered key speeches at the convention. Sixteen presentations had been given on the agricultural information management and technology for better services to their users.
The CIARD Session had been organized on October 26 during the conference chaired by Dr.Pan Shuchun, deputy director of the Board of Directors of CALS. A detailed introduction of the International Expert
Consultation on “Building the CIARD Framework for Data and Information Sharing” held during June 20 – 23, 2011 in Beijing, China was given by Dr. Meng Xianxue. It reminded once again the CIARD mission, objects, benefits and the key issues need to be solved for the agricultural information sharing at various levels. Dr. Sun Wei’s presentation introduced the CIARD RING system, its function and registration skills. Representatives of the conference have got more clearly
about the understanding of CIARD and its activities and another 10 more information institutions have registered to join CIARD during the meeting.
To promote accessibility and interoperability of agricultural information and more effective use of information resources, impetus open access of agricultural research information and data, China CIARD Secretary office decided to set up “China CIARD Forum” to enhance the communication among Chinese information specialists and develop indepth related discussions on China CIARD activity including its concepts and technical methods, operating modes and mechanisms to understand and master CIARD RING techniques for registration, data integration, interoperability, and utilization. In this way, with assistance from CIARD, we shall strengthen our national agricultural research data and information sharing system for agricultural research development and innovation, and improve communication and cooperation with other partners in the CIARD community in promoting of the open access and resource sharing of the world agricultural research data / information.
